Marlboro

Marlboro is one of the most famous brand names of cigarettes produced by the Philip Morris Company. This brand name is most famous for its original ads of the Marlboro Man – a tough-looking cowboy (or a group of such men) in the nature enjoying a smoke. The largest Marlboro plant is located in Richmond, Virginia, while the original street where this brand was first produced is called Great Marlborough Street, from which the product borrowed its name. In the 1950-s this company was among the first ones to start manufacturing cigarettes with filter following a serious scientific study that revealed the harmful effects smoking could have on health.

Few people know that originally cigarettes of this brand were intended for women and the slogan at that time was «Mild as May». The fact these products were aimed at women can be proved with the following: filters of the cigarettes were made pink to hide any traces of lipstick. Eventually, the production of pink-filtered Marlboro cigarettes was stopped because the demand was too low, only to be reinvented several years later with a new cowboy accent added to make sure people would have no doubt about the audience.
